Pronounced bilateral asymmetry of the complete upper extremity: a case from the early Neolithic Baikal, Siberia

Abstract: An adult male skeleton from the early Neolithic cemetery of Shamanka II on the south coast of Lake Baikal (Siberia, Russia) presents one of most striking examples of upper limb bilateral asymmetry documented without obvious indicators of skeletal pathology or trauma to the afflicted arm. The condition is noteworthy not only for its severity, with asymmetry values as high as 89.5%, but also for its involvement of the whole upper extremity, from clavicle to manual phalanges. The lack of any demonstrable hypertro… Show more

“…Most of these studies have focused on single indicators of skeletal health such as degenerative joint disease (DJD; Lieverse et al,2007a, 2009), musculoskeletal stress markers (Hawkey and Merbs,1995), spondylolysis (Simper,1986; Merbs,1996, 2002; Legge,2005), trauma (Legge,2010), or small suites of related indicators, especially dental health (Costa,1980a, b, 1982; Keenleyside,1998; Lieverse et al,2007b). Several studies addressing individual cases of biological (Buikstra,1976; Thompson and Cowen,1984; Irish et al,1993; Schwartz et al,1995; Lieverse et al,2008) or cultural interest (Melbye and Fairgrieve,1994) have also been published. Few studies have expanded to analyze overall skeletal health in a more comprehensive comparative manner (Keenleyside,1998; Lieverse,2005).…”

“…Bone tissue was serially sectioned to 6‐µm slices, stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H/E) and analysed using optical microscopy. Size asymmetry between the left and right bones was quantified using the equation ×100 (maximum − minimum)/minimum (Lieverse et al ., ).…”

“…They have been widely used to infer activity patterns and they are normally scored visually, either as the presence of changes (AlOumaoui et al, 2004;Cardoso, 2008;Alves Cardoso and Henderson, 2010;Villotte et al, 2010) or on a scale of expression (Hawkey and Merbs, 1995;Chapman, 1997;Peterson, 1998;Steen and Lane, 1998;Weiss, 2003Weiss, , 2007Eshed et al, 2004;Jordana et al, 2006;Mariotti, et al, 2004Mariotti, et al, , 2007Molnar, 2006Molnar, , 2010Lieverse et al, 2008;Wysocki and Whittle, 2000;Henderson et al, 2012).
