Prompt and Follow-up Multi-wavelength Observations of the GRB 161017A

Abstract: This paper presents data on the simultaneous and complementary observations of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 161017A for optical, X-ray, and gamma wavelengths obtained by the Russian multi-messenger Lomonosov space observatory and supplemented by additional data from the Swift satellite as well as the ground-based MASTER Global Robotic Net and the 10 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Multifrequency spectra of this very powerful explosion indicate that it originated at a distance of 10 billion light years from Earth.… Show more

“…The VWFC enables wide-field coverage in white light (W) with constant sky imaging every 5 s, which is crucial for GRB prompt detections (Gorbovskoy et al 2010;Kornilov et al 2012;Sadovnichy et al 2018). The brightness of the optical afterglow at discovery was W = 10.3 mag and it remained at this brightness for ∼150 s post-burst, thereafter rapidly declining in brightness.…”

“…MASTER Global Robotic Net was developed to study the key tasks of modern extreme energy astrophysics: to discover optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursts and to discover polarization of GRB prompt optical emission [24][25][26][27][28][29] ; to independently localize the sources of gravitational wave, detected by LIGO/Virgo 12,13 , to investigate high energy neutrino sources 30 , fast radio bursts sources [31][32][33][34] and other extreme processes in Universe. MASTER conducted optical observations that reveal strong evidence for high energy neutrino progenitor 30 .…”

“…and its autodetection system. Eight telescopes with a field of view of 4-8 deg up to 20 mag are distributed on the Earth, designed specially to disco v er and investigate optical counterparts of GRBs(Lipunov et al 2016 ;Sadovnichy et al 2018 ;Ershova et al 2020 ), GWs(Lipunov et al 2017 ), and other high-energy astrophysics sources in large error fields. The automatic strategy (MASTER central planner) of optical follow-up to triggers with large error fields (…”
