Promotive effect of Nostoc commune Vauch. water extract on seed germination of Gentiana dahurica Fischer

Abstract

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of water extract of Nostoc commune Vauch. on seed germination of Gentiana dahurica Fischer. Extract solution of N. commune was obtained by soaking 10 mg dry matter N. commune material in 1 L of distilled water (pH 10.0) at 80°C, and concentrating the filtrate 10‐fold by evaporation. Seed germination was tested at 25/15°C under a photoperiod of 8‐h light/16‐h darkness. The extract increased the total germination of G. dahurica by 37.0, 47.7, 34.7 and 11.7% as compared to 39.2% in the control (no extract) at concentrations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 × 10−6, respectively, and the speed of germination by 3.58, 4.89, 2.93 and 0.20%, respectively, compared to 2.76% in the control. The results indicate that water extract of N. commune improves germination of wild G. dahurica at low concentrations. This information may be useful for artificial cultivation of G. dahurica.
