Humidified perfluorosulfonic acid polymers with a nanoscopic phase-separated morphology are highly proton-conductive materials for fuel cells, yet morphology tuning of the acidic materials for enhanced conduction remains a challenge. Aqueous acidic lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) provide a powerful platform to construct welldefined nanostructures for proton conduction. We report an aqueous LLC formed by 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate, exhibiting a proton conductivity of 210 mS cm −1 at 25 °C, which surpasses that formed by alkylsulfonic acid, thus demonstrating that a mobile acidic anion is more efficient than constrained sulfonic acid functionality to transport protons in LLCs. For an aqueous solution of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate, a lamellar LLC results in higher conductivity than a micellar solution under the same hydration conditions. The peak power density of the fuel cell fabricated from porous membranes filled with the lamellar LLC is four times as high as that filled with the micellar solution. The work offers an efficient way to construct highly proton-conductive LLC materials for fuel cell application.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising solvents for catalytic and electrolyte applications, gas absorption, and extractions in electrochemical systems due to their useful features, such as high conductivity and good thermal, chemical, and electrical stability. This review focuses on incorporating ILs into fuel cell (FC) systems, specifically into two main components of FC (ie, polymer electrolyte membrane and electrocatalyst). In FC, a polymer electrolyte membrane with excellent conductivity and deprived of humidity even at high temperatures must be created for effective early commercialization of this technology.Electrocatalyst performance can also be enhanced with additive materials, such as ILs, thus further improving the entire achievement of FCs. This work discusses the most important reasons for ongoing studies and outlines the current progress in using ILs as a revolutionary form of polymer electrolyte membrane and electrocatalyst.

Anisotropic gels developed from polymer networks accommodating lyotropic liquid crystals are promising electrolytes but electrochemically inert polymers prevent ions from being conducted efficiently. In this work, we synthesized protic ionic liquid polymer in lyotropic ionic liquid crystal to improve proton conduction across the polymer skeleton in anisotropic gels. In situ polymerization of 1‐vinylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ionic liquid dissolved in aqueous 1‐tetradecyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate lyotropic liquid crystal gave chemical liquid crystal gels exhibiting both dynamic order and mechanical strength. The protic ionic liquid polymer bridged the hydrogen bond chains between neighboring ionic lyotropic liquid crystal domains to give a proton conductivity of 117 mS cm−1 at 25°C. Macroscopic alignment of the liquid crystal gel achieved by mechanical shearing promoted proton conductivity to 137 mS cm−1. The macroscopically aligned liquid crystal gel acted stably in a fuel cell device, delivering a peak power density 2.95 times higher than the unaligned one. Gelation of lyotropic ionic liquid crystals with protic ionic liquid polymer provides an effective strategy to develop anisotropic gel electrolytes for electrochemical devices.
