Higher education, including accounting learning, often employs conventional learning models that do not optimally involve active learning. This model is unable to facilitate students developing critical thinking skills (CTS) and learning responsibility (LR), so these two abilities are not yet possessed by students adequately. The learning model that is believed to be able to develop CTS and LR is the flipped classroom. This research aims to produce an integrative flipped classroom model (IFCM) that is valid, practical, and effective for improving CTS and LR students, especially in Introductory Accounting learning. IFCM was developed with research and development using four D models, which consist of four development stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. This paper presents the IFCM, development process in detail and the results at each stage of development, as well as the final product in the form of IFCM which has been proven valid, practical, and effective for improving CTS and LR students in Introductory Accounting learning.

El estudio de competencias debe contemplarse desde un enfoque holístico con el que cada elemento contribuya a mejorar el desempeño competitivo en el ambiente actual de trabajo. Los propósitos de esta investigación se encauzaron a determinar la relación entre elementos que integran un modelo de competencias funcionales y competencias personales y, la relación entre estos modelos. Para tales objetivos, se empleó un enfoque cuantitativo para realizar una investigación básica de alcance correlacional de corte transversal y diseño no experimental. El estudio se realizó con la colaboración de 182 personas de 76 empresas fabricantes de maquinaria y equipo del Área Metropolitana de la Ciudad de México. Se diseñó y validó un cuestionario de 49 ítems que midieron nueve componentes de los dos modelos de competencias. Mediante un análisis correlacional no paramétrico y una regresión lineal, se corroboró correlación positiva, moderada a fuerte y significativa entre los elementos de la competencia funcional. Así como, una correlación moderada a muy fuerte y significativa entre los componentes de la competencia personal. Finalmente, se evidenció la correlación significativa entre ambos modelos. Así, se sensibilizó la importancia de considerar un enfoque holístico en el desarrollo de competencias para manifestar un desempeño competitivo del individuo.

Online self-assessments need to be regular and reflective to foster student engagement and success

Assessment plays a major role in student learning. It needs to be provided on a regular basis and include the aspect of reflective practice to be really effective. The purpose of this article is to highlight the results of how an academic in Electrical Engineering effectively used Blackboard™ to foster student engagement and academic success through regular online self-assessments that require reflective practice. A time-lag study is used with a non-experimental descriptive design. A total of 812 first-year engineering students were asked to complete weekly online self-assessments via Blackboard™ between 2016 and 2018. Results indicate that students engaged at least three times more with each section of the course content and that their pass rate increased by more than 20% when compared to previous years where no online self-assessments were used. These results tend to suggest that online self-assessments should include multiple attempts with some form of feedback to foster student engagement and academic success.
