Promoting Science via an Equipment Loan Outreach Program

Abstract: An important component of many college and university science programs is that of community outreach. Some of the more typical kinds of outreach activities include teacher training workshops, public lectures, open house “science days,” and school demonstration visits. The latter activity usually consists of students and faculty transporting equipment from their institution to a local secondary school to provide “hands-on” demonstrations or activities to a few science classes. One problem with such visits is th… Show more

“…STEM outreach activities can come in many forms, such as public lectures, teacher training workshops, and STEM days/festivals held in schools or other settings (e.g., universities, museums, parks, and community centers). , On a high level, the format selected can increase inclusion by exposing students and their teachers to learning experiences that they may otherwise have missed due to constraints such as time, funding, and access.…”

“…Several options are available to help alleviate the proposed financial encumbrance. 5,6 Students collect experimental data by illuminating each of the vials of quantum dot solution with the 405-nm LED. As each vial is illuminated, the fluorescent emission spectrum is collected by a fiber-coupled portable spectrometer in conjunction with a laptop computer.…”

“…Within the framework of the Lisbon Agreement, all European member states are encouraged to take measures to increase the number of students in higher education in science and technology . From the current literature, it appears that most programs focus on children up to 14 years old. One can, for example, think of the large number of science centers and museums, showing that science and technology can be amusing and entertaining. The outreach program of the chemistry department, part of a broader science outreach initiative at Hasselt University called “UHasselt@school”, has the ability and opportunity to show an academic view on science promotion because special attention is paid to self-constructed knowledge and technology.…”
