“…This result is congruent with earlier significant findings, F(df ¼ l, 74) ¼ 11.16, p < .01 (Jones, 2009), on the outcome variable of perceived stress among Black college women. In addition, this finding is consistent with previous research indicating that students who participate in supportive college mental health programs reduce their levels of stress (Conley, Travers, & Bryant, 2013;Deckro et al, 2002;Steinhardt & Dolbier, 2008). Cohen, Aronson, and Steele (2000) found that support services that give attention to socialpsychological processes, such as threatening academic and social environments for Black, Latino, and female college students, boost both academic achievement and college adjustment.…”

“…There is clear precedent for creating composite variables by converting individual variables into standard scores and combining them. This approach was used by us in a previous report [80], as well as in papers in the fields of medicine [81], developmental psychology [82], epidemiology [83], and management [84]. This approach is warranted in constructing composite scales when the constituent items have different measurement response-scales and one wishes to weight the multiple items equally [84].…”

“…The participant sample was from a small university in the north of England. This limitation could be countered by research evidence from universities across the world which evidences similar stress and challenges facing students (Conley, Travers & Bryant, 2013;Thomas, 2012). Therefore the themes such as 'Building self-confidence and selfefficacy through shared experience' and 'Challenge building resilience' may resonate with many 1 st year students.…”

“…For example, many students who move away from home may have lost social support networks at a time when pressure to succeed in a new environment is intensified (Conley, Travers & Bryant (2013). In this period well developed individual coping resources will support success (Davidson, Feldman & Margalit, 2012).…”
