Promoting inclusion in clinical trials—a rapid review of the literature and recommendations for action

Abstract: Background Without inclusion of diverse research participants, it is challenging to understand how study findings will translate into the real world. Despite this, a lack of inclusion of those from under-served groups in research is a prevailing problem due to multi-faceted barriers acting at multiple levels. Therefore, we rapidly reviewed international published literature, in relation to clinical trials, on barriers relating to inclusion, and evidence of approaches that are effective in overc… Show more

“…We hope to expand these preliminary findings to future virtual studies and VCTs that will surely outlive the current COVID-19 pandemic [ 30 ]. As a study team, we are highly motivated to reduce the burden placed on study participants to make study adherence as easy and enjoyable as possible and to encourage a more diverse study population by removing logistical barriers to participation [ 31 ]. The findings from this exploratory research will contribute to the best-practices literature for VCTs and help improve the Current Health kit and study delivery for future research participants.…”

“…Clark et al, 2019;Witham et al, 2020). A recent rapid review of the literature highlighted the multifaceted barriers to inclusion, as well as identifying a range of strategies that could address some of these barriers (Bodicoat et al, 2021).…”

“…As described in previous studies there are inter-related reasons for the lack of diversity among research participants, such as how trials are designed, where they are delivered, and a lack of trust in the research process in some communities (Bodicoat et al, 2021;Harrison et al, 2020). The INCLUDE programme generated new resources to facilitate engagement and recruitment of under-served groups speci cally in randomised trials.…”
