“…The ages of attainment of play milestones in healthy children across countries is of utmost importance to integrated interventions that include play and are being highly promoted in LMICs. 3,27 A large proportion of the differences in ages of attainment of milestones was associated with timing of children's exposure to experiences. For example, South African children could drink from a cup at a median age of 8 months compared with Argentinian children who reached this milestone at a median age of 16 months.…”

“…54,55 Research into neuroprotective interventions early in life leads to more clear conclusions: antenatal corticosteroids to prevent developmental delays and antenatal magnesium sulfate to prevent gross motor dysfunction showed significant effect sizes of 0.49 (95% confidence interval 0.24 to 1.00) and 0.61, respectively (95% confidence interval 0.44 to 0.85). 56 In addition, the generally improved neonatal intensive care has resulted in a decrease in the prevalence of cerebral palsy, 57 which is strongly related to CVI. 39,40…”

“…In high‐income countries, early identification of children with developmental difficulties is an integral component of child health care and children who are identified receive individualised, family‐centred and comprehensive early interventions . In contrast, child development is rarely addressed during health care in low‐income and middle‐income countries, and nonindividualised interventions involve promoting nurturing care . While these universal strategies are crucial, complementary individualised approaches are also urgently needed to help close the unethical equity gap for children around the world .…”
