Maternal and child health status (MCHS) plays an essential role in the exclusive breastfeeding practice (EBP), which in turn helps to determine the nutritional status and development of children (NSC & CD) aged 0-6 months. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors influencing EBP, NSC, and CD to MCHS in Jember, East Java, Indonesia. A family-based survey was conducted among 470 mothers with children aged 0-6 months, by using a stratified random sampling method. Furthermore, a self-administered questionnaire was used to measure the characteristics of children and mothers, MCHS, EBP, NSC (z score with weight per age= WAZ and height per age= HAZ), and CD (pre-screening developmental questionnaire=PSDQ). The prevalence of EBP was 74.7% (95% CI= 65.5 – 81.2%), with influential factors being education, family income, children's age, and distress to limitations. Also, the Z-score of WAZ and HAZ were 2.99±0.22 and 3.01±0.22, respectively (3% of underweight and 1.7% of stunting). The factors influencing WAZ were children's age, birth weight, approach, and attentional shifting. However, the factors that only influenced the HAZ was the children's age. Also, among children three months old, the score of PSDQ was 8.30±1.33 (0.8% of deviation and 56.5% of suspect development), and their influenced factors were mother's work, infant's age, and the weight of birth. Among those that were 6 months old, the PSDQ score was 8.83±1.42 (7% of deviation and 24.3% of suspect development), and their influenced factors were mainly relationship. The analysis of the result further showed that the EBP, NSC, and CD, are related to MCHS, in rural agricultural areas. Therefore, the relationship of the parent-child should function appropriately, in order to support infant growth and development during lactation.

Promoting child growth and development is one of the Indonesian community health center's priority programs. Children's growth and development at early ages play a crucial role in defining children's future health trajectories. This study aims to describe community nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice towards child growth and development promotion programs in the community health center. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Bantul district, Indonesia, involving 73 community health nurses working in the community health center. The sample was recruited using multistage random sampling from 27 community health centers in the Bantul district. Three valid and reliable questionnaires were used to measure nurse's knowledge, attitude, and practice. The Guttman scale knowledge questionnaire consisted of 22 questions. The nurses' attitude and practice questionnaires used a four-point Likert scale and consisted of 23 and 21 questions, respectively. The assessment results were categorised into excellent (scored 75-100%), moderate (scored 56-74%) and poor (scored <56%). The results showed that 71 (97.3%) and 72 (98%) nurses had adequate knowledge and attitude towards child' growth and development promotion programs in public health centers, respectively. Nevertheless, only 45 (62%) of nurses indicated excellent practice towards the implementation of the growth and development promotion program. Among demographic variables measured, only education was associated with nurses' practice (p<0.001). Data from this study indicated that the community nurses might require more training related to the implementation of the health promotion program for children in the community health center to increase their practice and service to promote children's growth and development in the community health center.

Background Undernutrition in the critical first 1000 days of life is the most common form of childhood malnutrition, and a significant problem in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). The effects of undernutrition in children aged under five years are wide‐ranging and include increased susceptibility to and severity of infections; impaired physical and cognitive development, which diminishes school and work performance later in life; and death. Growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) is a complex intervention that comprises regular measurement and charting of growth combined with promotion activities. Policymakers, particularly in international aid agencies, have differing and changeable interpretations and perceptions of the purpose of GMP. The effectiveness of GMP as an approach to preventing malnutrition remains a subject of debate, particularly regarding the added value of growth monitoring compared with promotion alone. Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of child growth monitoring and promotion for identifying and addressing faltering growth, improving infant and child feeding practices, and promoting contact with and use of health services in children under five years of age in low‐ and middle‐income countries. Search methods We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date was 3 November 2022. Selection criteria We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), cohort studies, and controlled before‐after studies that compared GMP with standard care or nutrition education alone in non‐hospitalised children aged under five years. Data collection and analysis We used standard Cochrane methods to conduct a narrative synthesis. Our primary outcomes were anthropometric indicators, infant and child feeding practices, and health service usage. Secondary outcomes were frequency and severity of childhood illnesses, and mortality. We used GRADE to assess the certainty of evidence for each primary outcome. Main results We included six studies reported in eight publications. We grouped the findings according to intervention. Community‐based growth monitoring and promotion (without supplementary feeding) versus standard care We are unsure if GMP compared to standard care improves infant and child feeding practices, as measured at 24 months by the proportion of infants who have fluids other than breast milk introduced early (49.7% versus 70.5%; 1 study; 4296 observations; very low‐certainty evidence).
