In direct democracies, voters are faced with considerable information demands. Although search engines are an important gateway to political information, it is still unclear what role they play in citizens’ information behavior regarding referendum campaigns. Moreover, few studies have examined the search terms that citizens use when searching for political information and the potential “user-input biases” in this regard. Therefore, we investigate to what extent citizens search online for information about upcoming referendums and what differences emerge between proponents, opponents, and non-voters regarding the search terms they used and the results they visited, related to three national ballot proposals voted on in Switzerland on November 28, 2021. The study combines cross-sectional survey data with longitudinal digital trace data containing participants’ Google Search histories obtained through data donations. Our findings show that participants rarely used Google to search for information about upcoming referendums. Moreover, most ballot-related searches employed rather neutral search terms. Nevertheless, a qualitative analysis of the search terms points to differences between different voting groups, particularly for the most prominent proposal around a Covid-19 law. The study provides interesting insight into how citizens search for information online during national referendum campaigns.

We investigated the expressions of happiness and sadness in adolescents’ direct messages (DMs) on Instagram. Using neural topic modelling (BERTopic), we analyzed 211,778 DMs belonging to 96 adolescents, who donated data from 110 Instagram accounts. Results showed that (1) expressions of happiness were more than four times more prevalent than expressions of sadness; (2) the number of DMs containing expressions of happiness and sadness were highly correlated; (3) there are temporal trends in the expression of happiness and sadness in adolescents’ DMs and there are individual differences in these trends, and (4) there is no significant between- or within-person relationship between the number of messages containing expressions of happiness and sadness and adolescents’ well-being.

In this essay, we call attention to privacy as the foundational construct that underpins digital disempowerment. We argue that to better understand the processes of disempowerment, scholars must critically engage with the dimensionality of privacy conceptualizations and privacy-dependent constructs such as privacy concerns and privacy-protecting behavior, and the way in which these are measured. We focus on privacy's horizontal and vertical dimensions as a way to offer a more nuanced understanding of power in computationally mediated environments and potentially enable a more refined and meaningful understanding of privacy resignation and disengagement.
