Prolonged presence of replication‐competent SARS‐CoV‐2 in mildly symptomatic individuals: A report of two cases

Abstract: It has been estimated that individuals with COVID-19 can shed replicationcompetent virus up to a maximum of 20 days after initiation of symptoms. The majority of studies that addressed this situation involved hospitalized individuals and those with severe disease. Studies to address the possible presence of SARS-CoV-2 during the different phases of COVID-19 disease in mildly infected individuals, and utilization of viral culture techniques to identify replicationcompetent viruses, have been limited. This repor… Show more

“…Viral reservoirs are cells or anatomical sites where a replication-competent form of the virus can persist and accumulate with higher kinetic stability than the main pool of actively replicating viruses [ 11 ]. The prolonged presence of replication-competent SARS-CoV-2 viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) in mildly symptomatic or clinically recovered individuals is extensively documented [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Even in asymptomatic individuals, 50% of intestinal biopsies obtained at 4 months after COVID-19 infection displayed a lingering presence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids and immunoreactivity [ 15 ].…”

“…Effects of PAF Units on Deposition. When considering that viable SARS-CoV-2 is detectable on plastic and stainless steel surfaces for >72 h 27 and that viral shedding of replication-competent SARS-CoV-2 has been noted for greater than a week after initial infection in individuals with COVID-19, 70,71 it follows that studying engineering control measures that can be taken to lessen indirect exposure risk and additional viral load is important. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, within their Hierarchy of Controls, 72 notes that engineering controls are one of the ways in which individuals can be isolated from a hazard in the environment.…”

“…COVID status was determined by detection of SARS-CoV-2 on nasal samples or saliva by gene amplification and analysis, as described previously 15 . Health care workers were defined as any worker working within the HCFMUSP, including hospital and auxiliary services.…”
