Prolonged Postlaparoscopy Carbon Dioxide Pneumoperitoneum

Abstract: In this article we report what is to our knowledge the longest published duration of postlaparoscopy CO2 pneumoperitoneum, and discuss factors that may contribute to the duration of postoperative pneumoperitoneum.

“…The present study involved a follow-up of 50 patients who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy, in which one patient with implantation metastasis in the peritoneal cavity was identified shortly following the surgery. This may have been due to the following: i) the direct implantation of the shedded tumor cells; ii) trocar incision injury and leakage of CO 2 along the trocar; iii) atomization of the tumor cells; and iv) the effect of artificial pneumoperitoneum on cellular immunity (2831).
