Feasible regeneration protocol for economically important plant Eruca sativa was established and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity of regenerated tissues was evaluated and compared with plant material collected from the wild. Leaf portions inoculated onto Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium responded to all plant growth regulators exploited. Optimum callus production was achieved on a combination of 2.0 mg l(-1) 6-benzyladenine (BA) + 1.0 mg l(-1) α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and the lowest response was recorded for 0.5 mg l(-1) gibberellic acid (GA3) + 1.0 mg l(-1) NAA. The callus was subcultured on similar composition/concentrations of plant growth regulators after 4 weeks of culture time. A 5.0 mg l(-1) 6-BA + 1.0 mg l(-1) NAA produced optimum percentage shoot organogenesis after 4 weeks of subculturing. However, optimum number of shoots per explant was recorded for moderate concentrations (1.0 and 2.0 mg l(-1)) of kinetin. Incorporation of NAA into MS medium-containing GA3 also produced a feasible number of shoots/explant. Similar mean shoot length was recorded for 2.0 mg l(-1) kinetin + 1.0 mg l(-1) NAA and optimum concentrations (2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mg l(-1)) of GA3 + 1.0 mg l(-1) NAA. In vitro generated shoots were shifted to MS medium augmented with indole acetic acid (IAA) for rooting after 4 weeks of subculturing. Moderate concentrations (5.0 mg l(-1)) of IAA produced feasible rooting. Investigation of radical scavenging activity showed that callus possesses higher levels of radical scavengers than other plant tissues tested. Phenolics and glucosides are reported to be active components of Eruca sativa phytochemistry.

Current knowledge on the basic radionuclide tolerance indicates that plants may develop mechanisms preventing the damaging effects of radionuclide stress. The radionuclides content was determined in the Mediterranean coastal black sand soil and in the edible portions of the four food crop plant species, viz., Eruca sativa, Lycopersicon esculentum, Pasidium guajava and Mangifera indica. Biochemical and nutritional constituents were assessed to elucidate the possible effect of radionuclides on the edible portions of the plants. The ability of the four study plant species to accumulate Uranium and Thorium in their edible portions from the coastal black sand soil is higher than that absorbed from the inland agricultural soils. The nutritional constituents were affected by the high concentrations of Uranium and Thorium in the plant tissues. The total protein, moisture content, total phenolic compounds, total chlorophyll, total carotenoids, β-Carotene and Lycopene were positively correlated with Uranium and Thorium concentrations in the plant tissues, while the mineral content, vitamin C and total flavonoids were suppressed by high concentrations of Uranium and Thorium in the plant tissues. The fluctuations in the biochemical or nutritional constituents of the plant edible portions are considered an important defense mechanism to control the redox state of the cells accumulating radionuclides with high levels. In this research, the possibility of dill, parsley and leaf lettuce growth in a floating system was studied with the purpose of less nutrient (fertilizer) use. These baby leaf vegetables have short production cycles. The effect of full and half strength nutrient solutions on yield, quality and leaf nutrient status was studied. Research was carried during the spring production seasons of 2010. Standard nutrient solution ((mM) 12 N-NO 3 , 3.8 N-NH 4 , 2.8 P, 8.4 K, 3.5 Ca, 1.4 Mg, 9.5 Na, 8.0 Cl, 2.7 S, 0.04 Fe) was used as full strength (control treatment) and compared to half strength Hoagland nutrient solution. In both of the seasons total yield changed between 1030.78-1149.90 g m -2 in dill, 604.73-659.70 g m -2 parsley and leaf lettuce 162.60-143 g plant -1 respectively. In this study, the effect of treatments on some quality parameters (dry weight, vitamin C, nitrate, pH and EC) and nutrients uptake by plant were determined. When the results are evaluated as a whole, it was concluded that half strength nutrient solution decreased yield. Some savings could be achieved in terms of nutrient solution consumed by the plant with the negative impact on the environment.
