Proline accumulates inCasuarina equisetifoliaseedlings under salt stress

Abstract: The fresh weight of Casuarina equisetifolia seedlings decreased slightly with elevation of NaCl concentration in the culture solution. Na + concentration in the shoots gradually increased with increasing NaCl concentration in the culture solution and with increasing duration of the treatment. The Na + level reached 150 mmol L −1 in seedlings treated with 500 mmol L −1 NaCl for 6 weeks. The proline content of the shoots increased with increasing NaCl concentration in the culture solution and reached 13.5 µmol g… Show more

“…In our study, an increase in shoot proline content in responses to salt stress was recorded and found highly correlated to NaCl concentrations. This result is in agreement with the data obtained by Tani and Sasakawa (2006). Our results strongly suggest that C. glauca, like other species of the genus Casuarina that are highly tolerant to salt stress, synthesize L-Proline as a major compatible solute to adjust the osmotic pressure when the ionic form of Na accumulates in the cells and sustain the cell against homeostasis.…”

“…Enhancing Casuarina growth will help improve management practices of soil salinity and improves the sustainable use of irrigated lands. Accumulation of osmoprotectant molecules may also play important roles in raising the tolerance of inoculated Casuarina tree to salt stress (Tani and Sasakawa 2006). Therefore, our study was carried out to evaluate the survival, growth performance and nodulation ability of Casuarina seedlings grown in hydroponic N-free medium supplemented with different NaCl concentrations (50,100,200,300,400 and 500 mM) after being inoculated with two salt tolerant Frankia strains.…”

“…Soluble sugar accumulation has been reported with salt and drought stresses (Munns, 2005); likewise, phenolic compounds help in scavenging free radicals and protecting plants against the damaging effects of increased ROS levels due to salt and drought stresses (Petridis et al, 2012). Proline accumulation counter balances the deleterious effects of water deficit and salinity (Tani and Sasakawa, 2006;Ashraf and Foolad, 2007) and may serve as an organic nitrogen reserve that can be utilized during recovery from stress (Sairam and Tyagi, 2004). Proline accumulation cooccurred with higher activities of antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase) in younger seedlings, proving proline's role in activating antioxidant defenses in plants (Rejeb et al, 2014).…”

“…The magnitude of increase in free proline accumulation was higher in the tolerant cultivars than in the sensitive ones (Kumar et al . 2003; Misra and Gupta 2005; Tani and Sasakawa 2006).…”
