Prolactin-RsaI gene polymorphism in East Anatolian Red cattle in Turkey

Abstract: Prolactin (PRL) plays an important role in regulating mammary gland development, secreting milk, and expressing milk protein genes; making it a potential genetic marker and a candidate gene for production traits in dairy animals. The aim of the study was to determine by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method the gene and genotype frequencies of PRL gene in native East Anatolian Red (EAR) cattle, which are raised as a genetic resource in Turkey. PCR-RFLP analysis in… Show more

“…Cattle with AA genotype have higher milk yields than cows with GA or GG genotype (24). The genotypes AA, AG, and GG have the frequency of 0.07, 0.34, and 0.59, respectively, in the livestock population (25). In addition to genetic factors, prolactin (PRL) concentrations in the circulatory system are positively correlated with photoperiodic (26), but in this study the photoperiodic of all cows was the same.…”

“…Mahajan et al (2012)with Frieswal cattleamplified a 156 bp of the PRL gene in the exon-3 segment by PCR-RFLP method using RsaI restriction enzyme. Sonmez and Ozdemir (2017) using the PCR-RFLP method detected three fragments of the PRL gene in native EAR cattle raised in Turkey (GG genotype with 210 bp, AA genotype with 120 bp and AG genotype with 90 bp).…”

“…Patel and Chauhan (2017) found that the Chi-square values for Gir and Kankrej cattle in India were 13.46 and 12.58, indicating that the populations were not in HWE for PRL gene. Sonmez and Ozdemir (2017) applying PCR-RFLP in native East Anatolian Red cattle found that the population was in HWE for PRL gene. Bayıl and Bozkurt (2019) reported that the Holstein cattle population was in HWE for PRL gene since the Chisquare value was not significant (χ2 = 3.74).…”

“…Over the years, there has been considerable interest in the genetic control of egg production and egg size in poultry, especially in chickens. The prolactin (PRL) gene consist of five exons and four introns and is one of the gene markers that affects poultry birds' egg production traits (Wang et al 2011;Sonmez and Ozdemir 2017;Yournalis et al 2019). Constant research on the PRL is therefore, critical to understanding the genetic basis of optimal egg production in chicken (Osman et al 2017).…”
