Prokaryotic maintenance respiration and growth efficiency field patterns reproduced by temperature and nutrient control at mesocosm scale

Abstract: The distribution of prokaryotic metabolism between maintenance and growth activities has a profound impact on the transformation of carbon substrates to either biomass or CO 2 . Knowledge of key factors influencing prokaryotic maintenance respiration is, however, highly limited. This mesocosm study validated the significance of prokaryotic maintenance respiration by mimicking temperature and nutrients within levels representative of winter and summer conditions. A global range of growth efficiencies (0.05-0.57… Show more

“…Indeed, the relationship is valid even for model prokaryotes from other environments, as found in earlier eco-physiological studies (i.e., soil bacterium Klebsiella aerogenes, Neijssel and Tempest, 1976). We have also recently validated the field pattern between r and µ reported from the Bothnian Sea at low and high productivity under experimental control at the mesocosm scale, providing further confidence in the significance of maintenance respiration in the marine environment (Verma et al, 2022). Relationship between maintenance respiration, salinity and primary production (August average) at the different sites.…”

“…Complicating the relationship between bacterioplankton respiration and growth, the contribution of maintenance respiration of prokaryotes is probably of a sufficient extent to influence plankton respiration regulation in the field (Carlson et al, 2007;Vikström and Wikner, 2019;Verma et al, 2022;Wikner and Vikström, 2023). This should also apply to other planktonic organisms (e.g., Norberg and DeAngelis, 1997) but is not discussed in a review of zooplankton respiration (Hernańdez-Leoń and Ikeda, 2005).…”
