“…In his work The Achieving Society , McClelland (1961) observed that India's slow pace of economic development could be explained by the widespread shortage of people with the need for achievement. Taking clue from the lead given by McClelland, other researchers attempted to study achievement motivation among Indian people, but most of these studies were done during the 1960s and 1970s and were undertaken among young people and students, especially in relation to education and other similar fields (Mukherjee, 1965; Basumallik and Banerjee, 1967; Ray, 1974).
