Projections of the Midlateral Posterior Hypothalamic Area Influencing Cardiorespiratory Function in Rats

Abstract: The influence of the midlateral posterior hypothalamic area (MLPHA) on arterial blood pressure and respiration was examined in the rats. Electrical stimulation produced a rapid transient increase in blood pressure and rapid shallow respiration. Glutamate, which stimulates neurons and not fibers of passage, however, caused a fall in blood pressure and slowing of respiration. Projections of MLPHA traced by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and 3H leucine showed reciprocal connections with limbic forebrain … Show more

“…After injections of HRP, cells projecting to the habenula have been la beled in the area ventral to the fasciculus retroflexus, the supramamillary region, the interfascicular nu cleus, the paranigral area and the substantia nigra (compacta), comprising the mesohabenular dopa mine pathway [42], In other studies [18], the majority of cells contributing to this projection surround the fornix and extend laterally into the entopeduncular nucleus. This would be consistent with efferent pro jections of the perifornical area demonstrated by in jections of [3H]-leucine [12,21]. It should be noted, however, that in the dorsal approach to the MLPHA probes pass through the lateral edge of the lateral ha benular nucleus, and even our sham-operated rats showed some degeneration of the lateral habenula.…”

“…These projections were not shown by silver de generation following lesions in the MLPHA but have been shown by anterograde transport of labeled ami no acids from the MLPHA [21]. In the present study, extensive degeneration in the dentate gyrus of the dor sal hippocampus in all experiments appeared to result from damage to afferent fibers by the probe.…”
