Projection of primary and revision hip arthroplasty surgery in Denmark from 2020 to 2050

Abstract: Background and purpose: The incidence of primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) has increased over the last decades. Previous forecasts from different healthcare systems have predicted a continuous increase. We present a forecast of both primary and revision surgery from 2020 to 2050 based on 25 years data from the healthcare system in Denmark.Patients and methods: We retrieved data from the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register on 198,835 primary and 29,456 revision surgeries. “…Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has long been considered the gold standard for end-stage hip osteoarthritis as it offers optimal clinical outcomes and long-term survival, as documented by published data in long-term outcome studies and registries ( 1 - 3 ). In recent decades, the number of surgeries performed annually has been steadily increasing, causing an increase in the number of revision procedures ( 4 , 5 ). It is estimated that 35,000 people undergo revision THA surgery each year in the United States, which is expected to increase by 137% by 2030 ( 6 ).…”

“…The estimated annual volume of total hip arthroplasty (THA) is estimated to increase significantly in the next decades [ 1 ]. Despite continuous improvement in implant materials and design, the amount of revision THA (rTHA) will expect to grow too, increasing by 19% in 2050 [ 2 ]. At a 10-year follow-up, the revision rate of THA of 12% is to be expected [ 3 ].…”
