“…This chronic prevalent condition continues to impose a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems. Sharif et al predicted that the burden of OA in Canada will increase from approximately CA$2.9 billion in 2010 to almost CA$7.6 billion in 2031, in which hospitalization will be the main cost driver, accounting for 38.2 % of the total costs [42]. OA was on the top 10 list of most costly conditions in 2008 for USA as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [43].…”

“…The POHEM is a continuous‐time, dynamic, microsimulation model that was developed to characterize the lifecycle dynamics of the Canadian population . POHEM‐OA was developed by Kopec et al and was used in projecting the total direct cost of OA in Canada in a previous publication . The POHEM‐OA model uses the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) in 2001 to sample individuals for its initial population.…”

“…Several studies have evaluated the increasing trend in the number of total joint replacement (TJR) surgeries due to OA and changes in the prevalence of OA . Nonetheless, very few have evaluated OA's cost trend , and little information is available about the drivers and distribution of OA's average cost . Determining the distribution of cost helps identify the subgroups most affected by the disease, while identifying the cost drivers sheds light on the impact of policies targeting specific aspects of OA care .…”

“…They are not only the most common reason for prescribing medications, formally excusing patients from work, and even for early retirement, but also clearly limit quality of life and ability to participate [5], [6]. RMD often have multiple causes and need various therapies, many times simultaneously.…”
