Projected Lifetime Healthcare Costs Associated with HIV Infection

Abstract: ObjectiveEstimates of healthcare costs associated with HIV infection would provide valuable insight for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of possible prevention interventions. We evaluate the additional lifetime healthcare cost incurred due to living with HIV.MethodsWe used a stochastic computer simulation model to project the distribution of lifetime outcomes and costs of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) infected with HIV in 2013 aged 30, over 10,000 simulations. We assumed a resource-rich setting with no loss… Show more

“…However, recent estimates of health-care costs associated with HIV infection suggest an estimated mean lifetime cost of treating one person as £360,800. 31 Therefore, if around 3000 men are newly infected each year, new direct lifetime costs relating to their treatment alone will amount to around £1.1B. If generic drugs replace patented drugs, estimated mean lifetime costs could fall to £179,000.…”

“…As mortality is higher in those with HIV, the probability of death from non-HIV-related causes was increased by 50%. 83 The risk of death from non-HIV-related causes was age and sex specific. We conducted a sensitivity analysis that increased the probability of death by 100% for non-HIV-related causes.…”

“…However, mobile phone interventions are low cost. The cost saving for any new HIV case detected in the UK has been estimated at £380,000 (US$ 493,582) (Nakagawa et al, 2015), suggesting that even marginally increasing the potential for identification of new cases through increasing access to testing has potential for significant economic benefit.…”
