Projected health impact of post-discharge malaria chemoprevention among children with severe malarial anaemia in Africa

Abstract: Background Children discharged from hospital after recovery from severe malarial anaemia (SMA) are at high risk of readmission and death in subsequent months. Clinical trial results show that three months of post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PMC) with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine reduces this risk. Methods We developed a compartmental mathematical model describing the daily post-discharge incidence of uncomplicated and severe malaria requiring readmission among a cohort of 0-5 year-old children. We f… Show more

“…Nevertheless, in the areas where malaria infection is most endemic, the major cause of anaemia is malaria (Agagliati et al, 2022;Keating et al, 2021;WHO, 2021b;Ibeji et al, 2022). Malaria is attributed to anaemia prevalence, and high mortality rate and morbidity in children under the age of 5 years (Sardar et al, 2021;Fischer, 2021;Gayawan et al, 2022;Okell et al, 2022). Anaemia is said to be responsible for half of malaria related deaths in areas with high rate of malaria infection (Keating et al, 2021;Bahati et al, 2022;Papaioannou et al, 2019).…”
