Projected health-care resource needs for an effective response to COVID-19 in 73 low-income and middle-income countries: a modelling study

Abstract: Background Since WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, more than 20 million cases have been reported, as of Aug 24, 2020. This study aimed to identify what the additional health-care costs of a strategic preparedness and response plan (SPRP) would be if current transmission levels are maintained in a status quo scenario, or under scenarios where transmission is increased or decreased by 50%. Methods The number of COVID-19 cases was projected for 73 low-income an… Show more

“…Healthcare resource demand during COVID-19 outbreak is increasingly enormous worldwide. Edejer et al (2020) projected that the global healthcare cost estimate for the COVID-19 response in the status quo scenario was US$52·45 billion per month during the outbreak. Avoiding the burden during pandemics and conserving resources require intuiting early and comprehensive measures to improve city resilience for pandemic emergency governance.…”

“…Estimates of the R0 value of the virus in each country at the start of the pandemic are sourced from a previously published method using the squire model. 4 Using the base estimates of the infectivity for COVID-19 in each country, we estimate mortality rates under different scenarios where we temporarily modify the infectivity of the virus to represent the implementation of a social distancing policy in each country. We consider five scenarios:…”

“…The sustained flow of funding through assessed contributions totals only about $480 million annually, just slightly over half of the WHO's global public goods budget. This of course does not include the financing required to respond to a pandemic such as COVID-19 (Edejer et al, 2020).…”
