Project portfolio selection for construction contractors by MCDM–GIS approach

Abstract: In this paper, project portfolio selection (PPS) is considered as one of the main steps in project portfolio management (PPM). PPS which depends on different criteria such as strategic, financial, as well as project specifications is also suggested for construction contractors. Although it is difficult to consider all these criteria, the decision will be inaccurate when some of them are ignored. The most common multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodologies and geographic information system (GIS) are comb… Show more

“…A range of studies have explored the application of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) in various contexts. Hashemizadeh (2019) [40] proposed a method for project portfolio selection in construction, combining MCDM with GIS. Singh (2017) [41] used MCDM to select suppliers in a TV manufacturing organization, while Peng (2016) [42] applied MCDM to rank software defect detection algorithms.…”

“…They suggested that the WASPAS method was an appropriate method for risk assessment among other MCDM methods. Hashemizadeh and Ju [53] proposed a hybrid approach based on MCDM and geographic information system (GIS) to select a project portfolio for construction contractors. They first scored the decision criteria using the AHP method and then prioritized the projects using TOPSIS.…”

“…Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was proposed by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995, which is based on the research on social behavior by birds. In this algorithm, each particle has its velocity and position, which are updated during iterations based on Equations (12) and (13). At each iteration, it is significant to determine the local and global best solutions of particles in order to achieve the global optimum eventually.…”

“…In the existing research, MCDM methods and evolutionary algorithms (EA) are the most widely used techniques to solve the portfolio optimization problem. Hashemizadeh and Ju [13] combined the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and geographic information system (GIS) technology to determine strategic-aligned projects portfolio. Wu et al [10] used the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and interval type-2 fuzzy weighted averaging operator to score renewable energy projects, and applied non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II to select the optimal portfolio.…”
