Although access to sanitation has been recognized as a fundamental human right, 3.6 billion people do not enjoy this right globally. In this group, the practice of unhealthy sanitation behaviors, such as open defecation (OD), is very common. To alleviate this problem, several governments in low-income countries have adopted Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS). This is a participatory approach focused on ending OD and promoting good hygiene behaviors in target communities. This approach is centered around and highly depends upon a given community’s willingness to adopt the practices it advocates. However, the determinant factors in a community’s acceptance or refusal of these practices during and after CLTS implementation remain unclear. The aim of this paper is to highlight and categorize these factors to increase the sustainability of the approach. To achieve this, a study was conducted in the central-western region of Burkina Faso, where CLTS has successfully been deployed. We began this study by drawing a list of possible determinants through a literature review and grouping them into six categories. This enabled us to set up an evaluation matrix with scores for each factor and data collection tools. Scoring was based on the number of positive respondents for that factor. Data were then collected at the institutional, regional, local, and household levels from CLTS stakeholders to identify context-specific factors that underpinned behavior change in the surveyed villages. The literature review revealed six categories of acceptance factors. In our study, the importance of these factors according to our respondents were ranked in descending order as follows: environmental (C1 = 592), social (C2 = 390), governance (C4 = 247), territorial (C6 = 189), economic (C3 = 15), and technological (C5 = 0). The most frequently discussed factors obtained included the understanding of the health and economic consequences of OD (C1, score = 550); the popularity and reputation of Open Defecation-Free (ODF)-certified villages (C6, score = 179); men’s desire to protect their wives’ privacy (C2, score = 138); and women’s understanding of the adverse effects of OD on their children’s health (C2, score = 119). Incorporating the acceptance factors found in this study into future CLTS interventions will improve the effectiveness of the approach and increase the sustainability of ODF status in similar contexts.

Academic and professional literature records the primary areas of interest within a discipline and how they change across time. However, it does not always keep up to date with the practical needs of various industries. This article discusses the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) areas and their implementation among active project managers (PMs). The PMBOK guide defines terms, guidelines, and knowledge areas within project management. A survey was conducted among 117 active PMs who were asked to rate the degree to which they implement the PMBOK areas. PMs reported integration, cost, and procurement as being implemented by them to the greatest extent, while their implementation of quality, scope, and stakeholders was not reported. This points out the need for reinforcement among PMs. No correlation was found between the degree to which additional knowledge was implemented by PMs and the degree to which the knowledge areas were covered in the last generation of textbooks. Textbooks do not align with the PMs' implementation in their working fields. The study identified gaps between the degree to which the knowledge areas of project management were implemented and the importance that the authors of the textbooks attach to the above areas of knowledge. The research findings may contribute greatly to reducing these gaps. They can also contribute to training programs targeted at project managers.

Cameroon, located in Central Africa, plays a leading role in terms of trade, with about half of the GDP of the Central African Economic and Monetary Commission area. Yet, the quality of public expenditure in Cameroon is said to be one of the grievances plaguing its economic growth. This underperformance is generally linked to project management, an essential lever for the country's development. The construction of infrastructure is one of the challenges of Cameroon's development policy. This lack of stakeholders in the knowledge and practice of maturation has an enormous impact in the votes consumption and the execution of projects that inevitably leads to the abandonment of projects, the multiplication of amendments, poor workmanship and the lack of satisfaction on the part of the beneficiaries. Hence, this study, after performing a SWOT analysis on project management maturity in Cameroon public projects, explores 17 projects undertaken over the past decade, in order to probe the impact of problems caused by the immaturity of projects on schedule and costs. The results revealed that the general maturity level for this study was 68%. Out of the ten hypotheses stated, seven were accepted. It was also found that the level of maturity of a public investment project in Cameroon positively affects its delivery whereas, some of the maturity variables do not significantly explain the costs with its parameters but impact others. Recommendations for a better project management in the country are thrown.
