Sex trafficking has been identified as a prominant health and human rights concern in Canada. However, there has been little empirical research on the topic and existing studies are largely found within the grey literature. This review sought to identify and summarize the current scholarly literature about sex trafficking of women and girls in Canada. We identified empirical studies using a keyword search in ProQuest, Web of Science, and Scopus. Eligible articles were published in English in 2000 or later, included a focus on women victim/survivors, and analyzed human/participant data. Only 14 studies met eligibility criteria. Most studies were qualitative, based on interviews or focus groups primarily with stakeholders, and set in the province of Ontario. Key findings highlighted challenges in conceptualizing sex trafficking centered largely around issues of coercion and consent. Pathways into trafficking (economic displacement, past abuse, and broken ties with family and community) and gaps and barriers in anti-trafficking responses (narrow or conflicting definitions, stigmatization and criminalization of sex work, and a lack of accessible or appropriate services) particularly impacted Indigenous, im/migrant, and other marginalized women and girls. There is a pausity of empirical studies on sex trafficking in Canada and this has implications for the development of data-driven policies and protocols. Further research should seek to highlight the voices of survivors and impacted communities and evaluate strengths and limitations of Canadian anti-trafficking interventions.

The study explores the phenomenon of human trafficking in Zimbabwe’s second republic under President Emerson Mnangagwa. Using conflict theory, the study argues that the discourse of human trafficking in Zimbabwe is a complex phenomenon that has led to women’s and girls’ vulnerability in the Seke District. Primary data gathered from five female core informants who have been the direct victims of human trafficking and three significant others who were the parents and guardians of human trafficking victims. The snowball sampling technique was employed to obtain the female core informants for the in-depth interviews. The study also benefitted from secondary sources such as journal articles, online newspapers, government, and international UN, ILO, UNESCO, and UNICEF reports. The results of this study show that eco-socio and political ills such as a high rate of unemployment, a shortage of essential goods, cash, corruption, electricity, gender inequality, poverty, power relations and the continuous harassment by the security forces such as the police and the army have escalated the vulnerability of women to human trafficking in Zimbabwe. Since Zimbabwe’s eco-political situation is a powerful determinant of both the continuation and abandonment of the human trafficking social phenomena, this study recommends that the present government solve the grassroots causes of the phenomena. With enforcement at the grassroots level and regional and international initiatives, human trafficking can be combated.

Reflective practice is a crucial aspect of being a health professional and needs to be developed throughout one’s career, starting as a student. However, it can be difficult for clinical educators to facilitate student engagement in reflection whilst on placement across a variety locations. This action research study aimed to develop and explore the use of SMS as a tool to facilitate reflective practice for health professional students on clinical placement in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context. Following three action research phases, this paper focuses on the most recent (fourth) research phase. In this phase, ten health professional students were sent a series of three reflective SMS messages per week structured around a commonly used framework within this health context, the Making Connections Framework. A focus group was utilized to explore the collective experiences of five students and evaluated using thematic analysis. Four key themes emerged: 1) transition of SMS from a personal to a professional technology, 2) benefits and limitations of the professional use of SMS, 3) SMS for reflective dialogue, and 4) SMS and reflection ‘on’ and ‘in’ practice. SMS was found to be a viable tool for prompting reflection for students on placement in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander setting when embedded within a broader organisation-wide cultural integrity framework and structure.
