Modern building automation has to deal with very different types of demands, depending on the use of the building and therefore the persons acting within this building. To meet the demands of situation awareness in modern building automation, scenario recognition becomes more and more important to detect such demands and react to them. Two concepts of scenario recognition and their implementation will be introduced, one based on predefined templates and the other using an unsupervised learning algorithm using statistical methods. Implemented applications will be described and their advantages and disadvantages outlined.

Abstract-Today's building automation shifts from simple applications like controlling illumination and temperature towards complex applications like the observation of buildings for safety and security reasons or increasing the occupants' comfort. Complex applications require more and more sensory information. Existing approaches of sensor data processing cannot cope with these demands. In this article, we present a new, bionically inspired approach for coping with such a huge amount of diverse sensory information. For this purpose, an information processing principle called neuro-symbolic information processing is introduced which bases on neuroscientific and neuro-psychological research findings about the perceptual system of the human brain.

Abstract-Modern intelligent control systems for building automation, ambient living or surveillance control have to deal with upcoming requirements like increasing complexity of sensor data, or supporting human beings at their jobs. Therefore the system has to decide on actions taken in case of unforeseen situations. The most complex as well as effective decision making unit that is known, is represented by the human mind. Therefore it seems to be feasible to emulate the human mind in order to design a system for approximating its abilities. While in current Artificial Intelligence a number of generally accepted models, which rely on psychological or neurological theory, are known this paper will introduce a different approach. As a result of the interdisciplinary work of engineers and psychoanalysts a functional model of the human mind has been designed on the base of psychoanalytical theory. As result this work describes the first version of this model in detail and gives an overview on the psychoanalytical theory it relies on.
