(Project 14-6770) An Investigation to Establish Multiphysical Property Dataset of Nuclear Materials Based on in-situ Observations and Measurements

Abstract

Year 1 (10/14 to 9/15) [year 1 milestones completed] M1: Setup of in-situ fine probe TEM irradiation damage measurement at Sandia National Lab M2: Design and nanofabricate in-situ TEM testing devices for mechanical property measurements and integration with specimens obtained from milestone M1 with specific focus on time dependent measurements M3: Setup samples obtained from objective M1 and M2 to various test chemical environments with focus on understanding time dependent change based on fracture properties M4: Setup nanomechanical and micromechanical SERS to understand the effect of environment and temperature Year 2 (10/15 to 9/16) [year 2 milestones completed] M5: Conduct fine probe characterization experiments at Sandia National Lab with Zircaloy samples M6: In-situ TEM measurements of mechanical strength and fracture damage as function of irradiation and mechanical stressing, M7: In-situ Nanomechanical and micromechanical SERS based measurements of fracture strength M8: Identification of key microstructural parameters that link irradiation induced damage (based on Sandia measurements) and thermomechanical properties based on quantified data obtained during milestones M7-M9 Year 3 (10/16 to 9/17) (started and ongoing) M9: Combine feedback from Sandia and Penn State TEM experiments and simulations to provide uncertainty quantified dataset. M10: In-situ TEM measurements of mechanical properties (strength and fracture toughness) as function time dependent microstructure change and combine the data with the data obtained in objective M8-9. M11: In-situ Nanomechanical and micromechanical SERS based measurements to understand the effect of temperature up to 500 o C on fracture toughness and strength.
