Progressive Transmission of Images Over Fading Channels Using Rate-Compatible LDPC Codes

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a combined source/channel coding scheme for transmission of images over fading channels. The proposed scheme employs rate-compatible low-density parity-check codes along with embedded image coders such as JPEG2000 and set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT). The assignment of channel coding rates to source packets is performed by a fast trellis-based algorithm. We examine the performance of the proposed scheme over correlated and uncorrelated Rayleigh flat-fading channels with … Show more

“…The joint source-channel coding (JSCC) for JPEG 2000 image transmission has been studied extensively [16]- [35]. In [16], a combined source and channel coding method is proposed to provide robust transmission of JPEG 2000 codestream over binary symmetric channels (BSC).…”

“…The UEP method adopts a dichotomic technique for searching the optimal UEP strategy, and a virtual interleaving scheme is employed to reduce the effects of burst errors. In [35], a JSCC method for JPEG 2000 transmission over fading channels is proposed, and rate-compatible low-density parity-check (RCPC) code is employed with embedded codestream.…”

“…The various progressive transmission schemes proposed in the literature are based on Shannon-Nyquist sampling theory [1][2][3][4] and there are very few works which investigate the progressive transmission schemes for sparse signals. Progressive quantization of compressive sensing [5][6][7] measurements is suggested in [8].…”

“…The main idea in [15] is to segment the bitstream into consecutive subblocks of variable lengths and consider a tradeoff between the levels of source and channel coding systems. The authors in [16] proposed a JSCC method for transmission of images over fading channels and demonstrated the application of rate-compatible low-density parity-check (RC-LDPC) codes constructed by the progressive edge-growth algorithm, and used the UEP to protect the images. In [17], a parametric methodology in progressive source-channel coding for rate allocation has been developed.…”
