Progressive power system data interpretation and information dissemination

Abstract: The diversity and number of power system monitoring devices installed within networks has increased greatly in recent years, resulting in increased data volumes requiring interpretation by engineers. A progressive approach to power system data retrieval, interpretation and information dissemination is presented offering significant time savings and enhanced utility of monitoring devices through dissemination of generated information. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) alarms are retrieved and int… Show more

“…Thus, with DSS, the new visualization concept is to present the system behaviour to the operator by showing process coherences, high quality indicators and automatically generated control measures. The focal point here is to show the causal chain of system behaviour [15,16,18]. 2 shows the proposed decision support system for the southern grid.…”

“…This means that many rule-based expert systems developed to address alarm processing include some method of temporal reasoning. For example, one post-fault analysis system [7] has explicit concepts for events and incidents: SCADA alarms are first grouped into events, then related events are linked to form an incident. The investigation of an incident involves analysing the sequence of events to determine whether secondary analysis of further datasets is required.…”

“…The telemetry processor (TP) [11] is a rule based expert system designed to assess the performance of protection operations. Utilising knowledge elicited from protection experts, the TP interprets SCADA data in order to validate the correct operation of a protection scheme and distinguish the incorrect operations.…”
