Progressive Macular Hypomelanosis

Abstract: Progressive macular hypomelanosis (PMH) is a condition of unknown etiology characterized by asymptomatic, hypopigmented macules located predominantly on the trunk. We recorded 12 adolescents with PMH over a 6-month period. Ten were female, and the mean age was 16.6 years. The average time from the patients first noticing pigment change to diagnosis was 15 months. PMH is probably an underdiagnosed condition.

“…Progressive macular hypomelanosis, which may occur in adolescent children, is unlikely in our patients because it is chronic and typically occurs in adults and lasts for months to years. 8,9 Spontaneous remission within a few weeks was seen in all patients. Lesions in progressive macular hypomelanosis are typically ill defined, 8,9 whereas most lesions in our patients had fairly distinct margins.…”

“…8,9 Spontaneous remission within a few weeks was seen in all patients. Lesions in progressive macular hypomelanosis are typically ill defined, 8,9 whereas most lesions in our patients had fairly distinct margins. Eruptive hypomelanosis may be related to a viral infection because of a prodromal coryzal phase 1 to 2 weeks preceding the lesions, the eruptive nature with 1 or more successive eruptions of lesions, the fairly uniform sizes of lesions, and spontaneous resolution without action intervention.…”

“…Los estudios publicados acerca de esta materia arrojan diversas cifras no desdeñables sobre el porcentaje del total de urgencias de un hospital que constituyen los motivos de consulta dermatológicos. Estas cifras oscilan entre el 2,59% de urgencias dermatológicas con respecto al total de urgencias hospitalarias que encuentran Martínez et al [18] y el 8 al 10% que suponen las enfermedades dermatológicas del total de las urgencias de Medicina…”
