Progressive Failure Analysis of Laminated CFRP Composites under Three-Point Bending Load

Abstract: In this paper, the mechanical behavior and damage evolution of CFRP laminates under three-point bending loads were investigated. Based on the three-dimensional Hashin failure criterion and cohesive zone method, a progressive damage analysis model was constructed to predict seven different failure modes, and an improved stiffness matrix degradation law was proposed. Numerical simulations were performed using ABAQUS finite element software and UMAT user subroutines and verified by three-point bending tests. The … Show more

“…Intralaminar damages, defined as matrix and fiber breakages, are generally predicted using progressive failure analysis (PFA). The PFA method includes three parts, such as the material constitutive model, the failure criteria, and the material degradation model 9 . The most utilized criteria are the Tsai‐Wu and Tsai‐Hill criteria, 10,11 the Hashin criteria, 12 and the Puck criterion 13 .…”

“…Since then different kinds of damage formulations with a varying degree of complexity were developed for composite laminates and are applied in the recent literature. [15][16][17] Based on these damage formulations, the progressive fracture in composite laminates can be computed. The main focus is on the delamination of single composite layers [18][19][20] and on the matrix cracking.…”
