Abstract: Axonal loss in the optic nerve of patients with MS is greater than that expected in healthy subjects, regardless of the presence of a previous optic neuritis.

“…Blumenthal et al [43] and Schuman et al [38] have reported similar results in their evaluations of glaucoma and healthy eyes, and the most accepted theory is that it is difficult to calculate the RNFL thickness in the nasal area using the current measurement algorithm [9,12], although Knighton and Qian [44] suggested that this problem is due to the angle of incidence of the illuminating beam, which makes the RNFL image on the nasal side dimmer.…”

“…Several studies report a correlation between axonal loss in the optic nerve of MS patients and the extent of functional disability [7,8,9], but the risk factors for increased axonal degeneration remain unclear. RNFL atrophy has been demonstrated in MS patients [10,11,12], with axonal loss being greater in patients who reported a previous episode of optic neuritis (ON) [7,12,13]. Given that optic nerve evaluation is used as an axonal damage biomarker in MS patients, it is important to determine which sectors or RNFL areas are preferentially affected by ON.…”
