Progress on Airbnb: a literature review

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the extant literature on Airbnb – one of the most significant recent innovations in the tourism sector – to assess the research progress that has been accomplished to date. Design/methodology/approach Numerous journal databases were searched, and 132 peer-reviewed journal articles from various disciplines were reviewed. Key attributes of each paper were recorded, and a content analysis was undertaken. Findings A survey of the literature found that the majority… Show more

“…Small-scale studies on Airbnb published in international literature most often use cases from North America and Western Europe, as the earliest and largest markets of the platform (Ginindza & Tichaawa, 2019;Guttentag, 2019). However, activity and impacts of the platform differ between regions of the world following differences in housing market and tourism economy characteristics.…”

“…Activity of professional hosts and accommodation businesses, including these that provided their services before joining Airbnb, is unrecognized or treated as an anomaly. Also, studies on the platform that offers accommodation in 'more than 100,000 cities and 191 countries' (Airbnb, 2019) usually concentrate on a limited number of big cities in the developed countries (Guttentag, 2019). Acknowledging the typological and geographical diversity of Airbnb accommodation offer is necessary to gauge the impacts of the current and future development of platforms on tourism economy.…”

“…The recent expansion of the p2p market for tourist accommodation represents an additional consideration in debates about the benefits and drawbacks of tourist expansion in islands. The interest of researchers for this phenomenon has generated a substantial number of contributions, all very diverse in terms of domains, methods, and scope (Belarmino & Koh, 2020;Dann, Teubner, & Weinhardt, 2019;Dolnicar, 2019;Guttentag, 2019). Previous analyses of Airbnb were focused, among other things, on finding out what motivates suppliers and demanders to participate in this market (Karlsson & Dolnicar, 2016;So, Oh, & Min, 2018); on its potential discriminatory effect against certain groups (Edelman et al, 2017;Kakar, Franco, Voelz, & Wu, 2016); on the established reputation mechanisms (Fradkin, Grewal, Holtz, & Pearson, 2015;Zervas, Proserpio, & Byers, 2015); on the variables that may or may not determine price (Benítez-Aurioles, 2018a; Wang & Nicolau, 2017); and on the repercussions that it has had on hotels (Heo, Blal, & Choi, 2019;Zervas et al, 2017), employment (Fang, Ye, & Law, 2016;Mao, Tian, & Ye, 2018), and the housing market (Barron, Kung, & Proserpio, 2018;Horn & Merante, 2017).…”

“…As a phenomenon that has had significant impacts and has received considerable attention from researchers, after 10 years of existence it is of paramount importance to analyze published articles addressing this topic. Recently there has been a growing interest in examining how sharing economy and P2P accommodation research has evolved using different approaches such as literature reviews (Altinay and Taheri, 2019; Cheng, 2016), critical reviews (Dolnicar, 2019;Belarmino and Koh, 2020), content analysis (Cheng and Edwards, 2019;Guttentag, 2019) and systematic reviews (Prayag and Ozanne, 2018;Dann et al, 2019).…”
