Coffee cultivation in agroforestry systems is mostly planted without soil fertility management. While there are several management interventions to improve soil quality in agricultural practices, it is not clear whether particular treatments, such as adding organic fertilizers and nitrogen fertilizers could increase coffee production in agroforestry settings. This study aimed to analyze soil organic matter and nitrogen in varying management types and its effect on coffee bean yield in a coffee-pine agroforestry setting in East Java, Indonesia. We evaluated four types of coffee management (treatments) namely: (i) no management, (ii) pruning coffee plant branches, (iii) a combination of pruning and addition of fertilizers with a planting distance of pine trees of 3 x 2 m, and (iv) pruning under pine trees with a planting distance of 6 x 2 m. The soil organic matter, total and available soil nitrogen were measured at 0-0.2 m and 0.2-0.4 m soil depths. We measured coffee bean yield to 100 coffee plants per plot. The coffee bean yield in the no-management treatment reached 376 kg ha-1, while the yield under the other three treatments increased up to 3.9 times compared with no-management. This increasing coffee bean yield did not correlate with soil organic matter in topsoil, with a correlation between coffee bean yield and total ant available soil nitrogen being positive and negative, respectively. We concluded that the limitation of N in the coffee-pine agroforestry system would require management intervention in the form of adding nitrogen fertilizers to increase coffee bean yield.

Soil degradation is one of Ethiopia's most severe problems, contributing for the country's low coffee production. Many researches have been conducted by Jimma agricultural research and its sub centers to ameliorate the challenges and improve coffee productions across major coffee growing areas of the west and south western Ethiopia. The goal of this review was to summarize and document major research achievements recorded so far in integrated nutrient management on coffee and recommend future research directions. Integrated application of inorganic and organic fertilizers is the main sources for replenishing plant nutrients in agricultural soils. However, selecting the optimum combination of these resources based on soil type and crop species is necessary. In this context, field experiment was conducted at Haru and Agaro research sub center to assess the effect of decomposed coffee husk and NP Fertilizer on soil physicochemical properties and yield of coffee. Research results indicated yield of Limmu coffee increased by application of 50% recommended rate of N and P mineral fertilizer (RMF) (172 and 77 kg ha -1 NP, respectively) + 50% recommended rate of decomposed coffee husk (DCH) (10 ton ha -1 ) at Agaro. Similar trial conducted at Haru also showed that application of 50% NP + 75%DCH improved yield of Wollega coffee variety. Besides, application of Desmodium cover crop + 50% NP (172 and 63 kg ha -1 N and P, respectively) and NP mineral fertilizer ensure high coffee yield at Jimma. In conclusion, integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers was recommended for coffee production at Agaro, Haru and Jimma and their surrounding areas. Future research should concentrate on evaluating other organic inputs and combined reclamation of limemineral fertilizer-compost, frequency of application, economic benefits, and long-term effects on soil physicochemical properties, coffee yield and bean quality, and establish cost effective soil fertility management in coffee-growing areas of the country.

Soil degradation due to acidity is a serious problem in western Ethiopia, which would lower soil productivity and crop production. Implementing integrated soil fertility management is the most efficient approach for enhancing agronomic efficacy and boosting crop output while addressing the issue of soil acidity. This experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of combined coffee husk biochar (CHB), soil test-based value lime (STV), and inorganic-fertilizer (NPSB-fertilizer) rates on the optimum yield of garlic in Gimbi district, western Ethiopia. The field experiment was conducted during the 2022 cropping season on two sites. The experiment comprised 14 treatments laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Application of integrated biochar, lime, and inorganic-fertilizer rates showed a highly significant impact (p <0.01) on the yield and yield components of garlic. The treatment unit with T11 ha−1 had the significantly highest total fresh biomass yield (TFBY) per plant for both Farm-1 (65.9 g) and Farm-2 (75.3 g). Bulb yield fresh weight per plant (BWp) was highest in treatments of T4 and T8 ha−1 in Farm-1 (27.7–28.1 g) and in treatments of T4 and T11 ha−1, in Farm-2 (31.4–31.6 g). Marketable bulb yield (MBY) was significantly highest in treatments; T4, T7, T8, and T11 ha−1 in Farm-1 (8.5–9.3 tons ha−1) and Farm-2 (10.1–10.5 tons ha−1). Therefore, by combining, the application of 10 tons of biochar (CHB) + 75% of lime (STV) + 75% of inorganic-fertilizer (NPSB-fertilizer) ha−1 in strongly acid soil, and 7.5 tons of CHB + 50% of STV + 50% of NPSB-fertilizer ha−1 rates in very strongly acid soil are recommended for garlic production in Gimbi district, western Ethiopia, and similar areas. In order to draw firm conclusions, future research on more sites is necessary because this study was logically limited to two sites.
