Progress of Research and Development of Fundamental Technologies for Accelerator Magnets Using Coated Conductors

Abstract: A project to develop the fundamental technologies for accelerator magnets using coated conductors is in progress. A coil-dominated magnet and an iron-dominated magnet were designed, based on the conceptual design of spiral sector FFAG (Fixed Field Alternating Gradient) accelerator for carbon cancer therapy and that for accelerator-driven subcritical reactor, respectively. The required winding technologies were clarified through designing the magnets, and the R&D of winding technologies for coils with three-dim… Show more

“…The successful demonstration of the C1 magnet clearly indicated that the CCT concept with round CORC R wires is feasible for HTS accelerator magnets. It is a first step toward practical and reliable HTS magnets as a new paradigm for superconducting accelerator magnet technology that will enable next-generation circular colliders at the energy frontier and stand-alone magnets for applications such as injection chain [33], high radiation environment [34] and ion beam therapy [17,35].…”

“…As shown by increasing number of works on special doping aiming at 4.2 K application [26], [27], this area, that has seen much less effort that the 77 K oriented applications (power engineering), is at present getting much more attention. This is already a positive result of the EuCARD/EuCARD2 program, as well as of other programs for high fields magnets [28]- [31] and Fusion-DEMO [32].…”

“…E have been studying the feasibility of applications of high-Tc superconductors to the magnets for fixed field alternating-gradient (FFAG) accelerators [1], [2]. FFAG accelerators, in which strong focusing can be obtained by the fixed (dc) magnetic field [3], are attractive from the viewpoint of the compatibility with superconducting magnets [4]- [6].…”
