We present the results of finite-element modeling of a YBCO thin-film superconductor deposited on a nonmagnetic substrate and on a weakly ferromagnetic substrate. The model was implemented using commercial software to calculate the ac loss in the presence of a sinusoidal external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the surface of the superconducting tape. A strategy is demonstrated to overcome the difficulties in the finite-element method due to the high aspect ratio of the YBCO film by using the computed values of ac loss for thicker samples to extrapolate the results to the actual physical thickness of the superconductor (∼1 μm). The effect of the width of the weekly ferromagnetic substrate upon the ac loss of the superconductor film has also been studied.

Insulation in a high field superconducting magnet plays a critical role. For high field magnets using coated conductor, insulation faces a few special challenges. In order to maximize the engineering current density, the conductor insulation has to be very thin (e.g.). In addition to required mechanical and dielectric integrity under high stresses at cryogenic temperatures, the temperature during insulation process needs to be significantly lower than 200where degradation of coated conductor may occur.In this paper, we will first review the options for coated conductor insulation. Then we present our UV cured epoxy insulation system developed for insulating coated conductors. This reel-toreel system is able to coat YBCO tapes or co-winding steel tapes with 10 UV cured epoxy. The coating has good dielectric property and shows no cracking or de-bonding in liquid nitrogen under up to 0.75% of applied bending or tensile strains. In addition, a silica sol gel based ceramic coating system has been developed for coating oxides on steel co-winding tapes, taking advantage of excellent thermal properties of the oxides. Some issues of both UV cured epoxy and the sol gel insulation coatings will be discussed.

This paper presents a quasi-isotropic (QI) high temperature superconducting (HTS) strand which was designed by geometrically and symmetrically arranged by four stacks each of which consisted of 18 ReBCO coated conductors (ReBCO CC), its outer sheaths may be copper, aluminum and stainless steel (SS) which functions as stabilizers and jackets. A dummy model of the strand with square cross-sections was fabricated in order to assess the feasibility of reducing the anisotropic critical current and improving current carrying capacity. Its critical current at self field was calculated at different transport currents. Due to its geometrically symmetric configuration, the goal is to improve its anisotropic critical current resulting from the critical current in ReBCO CC is anisotropic. The anisotropic critical current was experimentally tested in self field and relative low external direct current (DC) magnetic field and 77 K, the results indicate that the anisotropy of its critical current is improved too much in low magnetic fields, and at least the strand can be quasi-isotropic.
