Progress in biological control of the Colorado beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) in Eastern Europe

Abstract: Intensive studies conducted in Eastern Europe to introduce and acclimatize two predatory bugs, Perillus bioculatus and Podisus maculiventris, and one fly, Doryphorophaga doryphorae, have not given positive results so far. Seasonal colonization with predators has provided good protection of potato and aubergine crops but the method requires release of high numbers of insects. Two microbial insecticides are produced, registered and used in the USSR for controlling the Colorado beetle, namely Boverin (Beauveria b… Show more

“…Pest control researchers reported successful control from combinations of Boverin with 1/4 rates of DDT and other insecticides (see Lipa, 1985). The explanation of this success was described in terms of the intoxicated (weakened) larvae becoming more susceptible to fungal infection.…”

“…A preparation of B. thuringiensis containing thuringiensis ( -exotoxin) as the active ingredient was produced in the Soviet Union under the name Bitoxibacillin (Lipa, 1985). Experimental thuringiensin-based preparations also have been tested in the USA (Anderson et al, 1989;Jaques and Laing, 1989).…”

“…It may be said that control of Colorado beetle determines the intensity of the whole plant protection programme in Poland, as chemical control is performed every year on 83-97% of the potato area and consumes the largest quantities of insecticides used in Poland (Lipa, 1985(Lipa, , 1992Piekarczyk & Lipa, 1985;Pruszynski & Wegorek, 1991).…”
