Progress in and prospects for electrical insulating materials

Abstract: The performance of electrical equipment and devices is determined to a great extent by the properties of their insulating materials. In power systems and electrical devices, insulating materials have to work in extreme circumstances that can include high temperature differences, intense radiation, and strong electric fields. Such conditions demand highquality insulating materials with superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties as well as resilience to other environmental stresses. This study focus… Show more

“…[ 82,83 ] Although insulating materials with high corona resistance and tracking resistance were also developed, demonstrating the pronounced effect of nano Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , yet, their improvement is not as effective as micron‐sized mica and progress in this subject remains slow. [ 84 ] Partial discharge can generate high energy electrons, ultraviolet rays, local high temperature, and active ions. The nanofillers tend to resist the high energy damage and thus increase the discharge resistance performance of the dielectric.…”

“…The effectiveness of a heat spreading material is related to its thermal conductivity [4]. Thus, the key point of the thermal management is to use electrically insulating materials that have higher thermal conductivities [5]. Watts per meter-kelvin (W·m −1 ·K −1 ) is the commonly used unit for thermal conductivity in the related disciplines.…”

“…Silicone rubber (SR) has been widely used in high-voltage outdoor insulation due to the excellent hydrophobicity and weather-resistance [1][2][3]. Fillers are added into the pure SR to improve specific properties as well as to reduce cost [4][5][6].…”
