Progress, Barriers, and Prospects for Achieving a “Hydrogen Society” and Opportunities for Biochar Technology

Abstract: The concept of a “hydrogen (H2) society” is meant to serve as a greener alternative toward fossil fuel utilization and mitigating the climate crisis. However, major challenges concerning sustainability in the production of H2 need to be resolved to fulfill the development of a hydrogen society. Climate change cannot be mitigated while fossil fuels remain the primary source of H2 production. The use of excess renewable energy to produce H2 can also be economically challenging; moreover, difficulties in storage … Show more

“…Hydrogen (H 2 ) has been considered as an energy carrier in recent years because a climate change resulting from fossil fuel has been accelerated. 1 Nevertheless, owing to the inherently low volumetric energy density of hydrogen gas, it necessitates storage in solid or liquid form at low temperature and high pressure. 2 This process is energy-intensive, and even in its liquid state, hydrogen retains a relatively low volumetric energy density.…”

“…Fossil fuel usage shows directly proportional relationship to the energy demand and is a major cause of environmental pollution, resulting in global warming and abnormal climate events. , For eco-friendly power generation, renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal power, have garnered considerable interest. However, the technological limitations associated with intermittent power generation using these renewable energy sources have hindered the development of sustainable energy systems .…”

“…First, technological innovation can be applied to create a business model for a technology to permeate the market and substantially reduce costs for critical environmental engineering services, thereby providing greater access to more people. In their 2022 paper, Igalavithana et al 1 looked at multiple ways that biochar-based materials can advance the development of a low-cost, renewable hydrogen economy that is one of the most likely pathways to reducing the world's dependence on fossil fuels. Second, enhanced transparency through real-time information sharing about the performance or energy usage of an environmental engineering system can result in better decision making around resource allocation and create accountability.…”
