Progress and perspective on advanced cloaking metasurfaces: from invisibility to intelligent antennas

Abstract: Among the different cloaking applications proposed in the literature, the antenna framework has emerged as one of the most fruitful and mature field. In particular, mantle cloaking approach has proven to be a powerful tool for enabling unprecedented possibilities in antenna design. Here, we provide a review of the most significant works in the field of electromagnetic invisibility for antenna applications, demonstrating the versatility of cloaking metasurfaces in antenna scenarios. We also discuss our recent r… Show more

“…For example, the reduced interference and low visibility of a receiving antenna in sensing, imaging, monitoring, and communication applications are typically required to improve the overall performance of the system and make the system robust, which is achieved by cloaking the receiving antenna [1]- [5]. The elimination of the mutual coupling between tightly arranged antenna elements is also one of the main applications utilizing the cloaking technique [1], [6]- [9].…”

“…As a first example of metasurfaces featuring advanced functionalities [20], we focus our attention on non-linear structures and, in particular, on the possibility to make the behaviour of a metasurface sensitive with respect to the level of the impinging power [21]- [26].…”

“…As a first step of the design process, the horizontal strips have been designed to return a large equivalent reactance (i.e., X s = -5000 Ω/sq). Towards this end, an analytical design procedure [23] and a full-wave numerical optimization through the commercial solver CST Microwave Studio® aiming at considering the nonidealities due to the curvature of the strips have been exploited. It is worth pointing out that different combinations of g and w can be used to achieve the desired surface reactance.…”

“…In fact, vertically polarized dipole/monopole antennas are widely employed in various mobile communications, broadcasting, networking, and sensing applications. To equip such antennas with unprecedented functionalities, one possibility is to surround them with properly designed metasurfaces [23]. For instance, the use of lightweight conformal metasurface coatings has been proposed and successfully demonstrated for the reduction of the blockage and mutual coupling effects arising between antennas placed in close proximity, allowing the design of extremely compact communication systems for both terrestrial [24]- [27] and satellite [28]- [30] applications.…”
