Programmer eXperience: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Programmers use various software development artifacts in their work, such as programming environments, design documents, and programming codes. These software artifacts can be studied and improved based on usability and User eXperience (UX) factors. In this paper, we consider programmers to be a specific case of users and analyze different elements that influence their experience in this specific context. We conducted a systematic literature review of papers published over the last ten years related to 1) the… Show more

“…As stated in the International Organisation for Standardisation's (ISO) standard 9241-210 clause 2.15 on human-centred design, UX is defined as: "a person's perception and responses resulting from the use and/or anticipated use of a product, system, or service" (Morales et al, 2019). Nowadays, UX is increasingly becoming important as a parameter to achieve the success of a product, system, or service in many fields, including the government sector (Chen et al, 2021).…”

“…The primary difference between their study and ours is the specific focus on machine learning techniques in predictive maintenance, whereas our study centers on the correlation between developer experience and code quality across various software engineering contexts. J. Morales et al [40] conducted a systematic literature review on the Programmer eXperience (PX) over the past ten years (January 2009 to October 2018). Initially, 977 papers were identified, which was refined to 73 relevant papers after applying selection criteria.…”
