Programing stimuli-responsiveness of gelatin with electron beams: basic effects and development of a hydration-controlled biocompatible demonstrator

Abstract: Biomimetic materials with programmable stimuli responsiveness constitute a highly attractive material class for building bioactuators, sensors and active control elements in future biomedical applications. With this background, we demonstrate how energetic electron beams can be utilized to construct tailored stimuli responsive actuators for biomedical applications. Composed of collagen-derived gelatin, they reveal a mechanical response to hydration and changes in pH-value and ion concentration, while maintaini… Show more

“…The target cells used in the ADCC activity determination assay for the antiviral antibodies, unlike the ready-to-use tumor cell lines used for antitumor antibodies, were prepared by transient infection of the susceptible cells with live viruses or pseudoviruses 52 54 , so the preparation procedure is complex, and the target cells are unstable and highly variable. In this study, we generated a 293T/MERS cell line stably expressing the MERS-S as the target cell in the ADCC assay (Fig.…”

“…The latter shows the minimum swelling ratio at the isoelectric point near the neutral pH (pH 7-9, type A, form porcine skin), where anionic and cationic forms are exactly balanced resulting in chain collapse. 40,76 In contrast, PGSG copolymers showed the minimum swelling at the acidic pH and the maximum was achieved at the basic pH. It can be concluded that the number of ionisable carboxyl groups is higher than that of amine groups in PGSG copolymers.…”

“…They showed that the irradiation modifies the swelling properties of gelatine, which produces anisotropic deformation when used in a bilayer configuration (Figure 10B). [161] The structural design of pH-responsive actuators goes beyond layered structures. For example, researchers sought to emulate the mechanical properties and flexibility of yarn.…”
