Prognostic values of normal preoperative serum cancer markers for gastric cancer

Abstract: We examined the prognostic value of normal levels of four serum cancer markers, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate associated antigen (CA19-9), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125), in gastric cancer patients. Among 1927 gastric cancer patients enrolled in this study, 1477 were male (76.6%) and 450 were female (23.4%). The median age was 57 years (range 20-86). Clinicopathological features and survival times were recorded, and the association between CEA, CA19-9, AFP, and CA125 leve… Show more

“…For screening GC, several non-invasive biomarkers (tumor markers) such as CEA, CA125, and CA19-9 have been widely used for the diagnosis of GC [ 23 ]. However, sensitivities of individual or combined tumor markers with different cut-off values are reported to be as low as 4.7 – 47.7% [ 2 , 24 – 26 ].…”

“…Unfortunately, GC is difficult to diagnose at an early stage. Therefore, people are very interested in finding prognostic markers for these potentially curable patients [9][10][11][12][13].…”
