Prognostic value of the Sinonasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22) in chronic rhinosinusitis

Abstract: Previous studies have highlighted that baseline Sinonasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22) score affects surgical outcomes in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and suggested that a SNOT-22-based approach might ameliorate patients' understanding of expectations after treatment. Our study aimed at verifying this hypothesis in an Italian CRS population. In 457 CRS patients treated with endoscopic sinus surgery after failure of maximal medical therapy, the percentage of achieving a minimal clinically important difference (MCI… Show more

“…In the literature, similar to our study, mucociliary clearance function and sinonasal complaints were evaluated in pathologies that directly affect the nasal mucosa, such as acute rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis. More significant changes were found in these studies compared to those obtained in our study [ 29 , 30 ]. This suggests that increases in MCT, nasal blockage and postnasal discharge complaints detected in the N95 mask group and the increase in nasal blockage complaint seen in the surgical mask group were mild.…”

“…Sensitization for common inhalants was evaluated on the basis of recent pre-existing skin or blood tests as defined by the Global Atlas Test Panel for Europe 20 . Symptoms were collected through the Italian version of the SinoNasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT 22) questionnaire 21 and analysed both as total (SNOT 22) and partial (SNOT 1-12) scores, and as individual symptoms 22,23 . Endoscopic findings of the entire cohort were scaled according to the Lund-Kennedy Score (LKS) 24 and the size of nasal polyps in the CRSwNP subgroup was calculated through the Nasal Polyp Score (NPS) 25 .…”

“…In the rapidly evolving world of clinical research in rhinology, the number of patients should be increased and the data should be re-evaluated and enriched with increasingly popular scores (e.g. SNOT 27 , ACT, UPSIT) and information that help in defining the endotype (e.g. FeNO, periostin and blood eosinophils, but also expression of inflammatory cytokines) 28 and to stratify the results and impact of surgery according to the endotype.…”
