Prognostic value of the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: PurposeThe present study was designed to retrospectively evaluate the prognostic value of the C-reactive protein/albumin (CRP/ALB) ratio in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).MethodsOne hundred and twenty-nine newly diagnosed LSCC patients admitted between May 2006 and October 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Their serum CRP and ALB were quantified preoperatively. The relationship between the CRP/ALB ratio and the clinicopathologic features was analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic curve was use… Show more

“…It is noteworthy that the cutoff value of the CRP/Alb ratio in this study (0.32) was much higher than that in previous studies of head and neck cancer. 23,24 Yu et al 23 reported a cutoff CRP/Alb ratio of 0.047 as a prognostic indicator for patients with laryngeal cancer, but this study enrolled a low 35 these differences in the study population and site of primary tumor as well as patient's age may account for the increased cutoff value of the CRP/Alb ratio in our study. A difference in the cancer stage of the enrolled patients may also account for the different cutoff CRP/Alb ratios of 0.5 and 0.095 found in two recent studies on operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.…”

“…The CRP/Alb ratio was also identified as a prognostic factor in laryngeal and nasopharyngeal cancers. 23,24 Our findings showed that only the CRP/Alb ratio was correlated with DFS and OS in multivariate analysis (Tables 2 and 3). In contrast, mGPS, NLR, and PLR were not independent prognostic factors, although mGPS showed a tendency to be a significant marker.…”

“…In addition, a Taiwanese group published various studies on the prognostic role of CRP in oral cancer and could consistently demonstrate an association between elevated CRP levels and survival [34][35][36]. More recently, pre-therapeutic indices of systemic inflammation based on CRP and albumin have been found to provide prognostic information in nasopharyngeal and laryngeal cancer patients [37,38].…”
