Prognostic Value of Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) in Patients with Glioblastoma: A Comprehensive Study Based on Meta-Analysis and Retrospective Single-Center Analysis

Abstract: Inflammation is related to cancer. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) has been linked to the prognosis of many types of cancer. The present study aimed to determine the prognostic value of the SII in glioblastoma (GBM) patients based on meta-analysis and single-center retrospective analysis. Relevant publications published before 1 October 2022 were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library databases, and Web of Science. Moreover, 208 GBM patients from Zhongnan Hospital were incorporat… Show more

“…Similarly, studies have found that SII is a risk factor for liver steatosis, but it is not associated with liver fibrosis [ 24 ]. Meta-analysis showed that high SII levels significantly reduced overall survival (OS) in patients with small-cell lung cancer and glioblastoma [ 25 , 26 ]. In addition, in recent years, some studies have begun to focus on the relationship between SII and cardiovascular disease.…”

“…Recently, numerous meta-analyses have analyzed SII's performance in predicting various cancer types (28,30,(45)(46)(47)(48). In a meta-analysis of 1768 patients, Wang et al reported that in breast cancer cases (BC), poor OS and disease-free survival (DFS) were considerably correlated with increased SII (48).…”

“…In the majority of glioblastoma/glioma studies ( Table 1 ), high NLR was established as an independent factor for worse outcomes without including MGMT promoter methylation status, steroid use, IDH mutation status, or other prognostic variables in multivariate analyses. Nevertheless, baseline NLR was still prognostically independent of MGMT promoter methylation status ( 58 , 129 ), IDH mutation status ( 51 , 92 , 121 ), and steroid use ( 122 , 124 ) in patients with glioblastoma, and patients with increased NLR and requiring steroids had the poorest outcomes ( 73 ). Moreover, in a recent prospective glioma study (n=73, 37% with grade III astrocytoma and 63% with grade IV glioma), patients were divided into four groups based on the median baseline NLR and NLR decrease during chemoradiotherapy ( 53 ).…”
