Prognostic Value of Primary Tumor Uptake on F-18 FDG PET/CT in Patients with Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer

Abstract: Purpose To determine the prognostic implications of pretreatment F-18 FDG PET/CT in patients with invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC), we evaluated the relationship between FDG uptake of the primary tumor and known prognostic parameters of breast cancer. Prognostic significance of tumoral FDG uptake for the prediction of progression-free survival (PFS) was also assessed. Materials and Methods Fifty-five female patients with IDC who underwent pretreatment F-18 FDG PET/CT were enrolled. The maximum standardized … Show more

“…In our previous study (10), the group with a high primary-tumor SUVmax had a significantly worse prognosis, but LN status was the most powerful prognostic factor since all patients with disease progression were LN-positive. Although the prognostic value of nodal SUVmax was not evaluated in the previous study, we found an interesting point.…”

“…Previously, we investigated the prognostic value of 18 F-FDG uptake by the primary tumor in patients with invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC). In that study, primary-tumor maximum SUV (SUVmax) exhibited a strong relationship with known prognostic parameters of breast cancer and could be used as a good surrogate marker for the prediction of progression in patients with IDC (10). Recently, a few studies have shown that 18 F-FDG uptake by LNs as well as by the primary tumor is an important prognostic factor in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (11) and locally advanced cervical cancer (12).…”

“…PET/CT also has been suggested to have a considerable prognostic utility in various cancers [10][11][12][13]. In a previous study, primary tumor maximum SUV (pSUVmax) exhibited a strong relationship to known prognostic parameters of invasive ductal cancer (IDC) of the breast and could be used as a good surrogate marker for the prediction of progression in patients with IDC [14]. But the relationship between HIF-1a and pSUVmax was not clearly reported in IDC.…”

“…Mastectomy performed upon completion of NAC (eight courses) showed no pCR 1 3 controversial. Several authors have suggested that SUV in primary breast cancer [10,[96][97][98][99] or in axillary LN metastasis [34,100] could be predictive of outcome. Jo et al [99] evaluated whether preoperative SUV max of the primary tumor was associated with DFS in 508 patients with invasive ductal breast cancer, along with histological and biological factors such as tumor size, histological grade, or hormonal receptor expression status, and concluded that a high primary tumor SUV max is an independent factor associated with recurrence.…”
