Prognostic Value of Podoplanin in Various Tumors

Abstract: Background: The prognostic significance of podoplanin (PDPN) in tumor cells for cancer patients’ survival remains controversial. Therefore, we performed this meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between the podoplanin-positive tumor cells and cancer prognosis. Method: Eligible studies were identified by searching the Pubmed and EBSCO online databases up to August 2019. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate the correlation between podoplanin expression and over… Show more

“…High expression relation between TNM stage and poor N stage with podoplanin expression in tumour cells is in accordance with the results of Wang et al [36] in their meta-analysis on the prognostic value of podoplanin expression in various tumours. This observation stressed the critical role of podoplanin in tumourigenesis by induction of lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic dissemination of the tumour cells.…”

“…Clone D2-40 recognize podoplanin in normal and neoplastic tissues, and it has been used for the identification of lymphatic invasion in a variety of cancers. (10)(11) Lymphatic vessels were counted only in the cortex, and their areas were measured, using an Olympus Cell B Basic Imaging Software and the Olympus SC50 camera attached to an BX51 microscope. Lymphatic areas were defined as vascular areas delineated by D2-40 positive staining.…”

“…It is not specific to fibroblasts; it is also expressed in inflammatory macrophages and sometimes in epithelial tumor cells [10]. The expression of podoplanin in epithelial cancers by different cells has been reported more commonly at the invasive front [12][13][14] and has been associated with an immunosuppressive microenvironment, remodeling of the extracellular matrix [11], and higher carcinoma cell migration and invasion [15].…”

“…CRC studies have used these stromal markers to predict tumor characteristics and patient evolution, demonstrating that they somehow play a role in the neoplastic progression of CRC [16]. However, the findings in CRC patients remain unclear, with stromal features and the expression pattern of cancer-CAFrelated proteins, as well as their significance, differing between studies [12,15,[17][18][19]. In this study, we investigated the activity pattern of the elements that collectively make up the TME of CRC and their associations with neoplastic progression features, observing them, in a particular approach, in different interface zones of the tumor mass.…”
